VoIP: Operator Deployment Casestudies
Back to Agenda

Following up on our previous session, let's discuss further the implications and implementation of VoIP on broadband wireless networks with "in the trench" experiences from operators deploying VoIP on license-exempt broadband wireless networks today.

Midwest Wireless currently services over 68 counties spanning Minnesota, Iowa and Wisconsin.  Based in Mankato, Minnesota, Midwest Wireless services close to 5,000 wireless broadband customers and 300,000 cellular customers.  Midwest Wireless deploys one common VoIP solution FOR THEIR their entire network with MPLS.

Montana Internet Corporation is currently putting the final touches on it's own VoIP service offering that it will be providing to customers over the next few months.  Instead of reselling another provider's VoIP service, MIC has elected to roll it's own service using Asterisk.  In developing this product, MIC has worked its way through numerous potential pitfalls (and had to dig itself out of a few as well), including equipment selection, CPE provisioning, asterisk configuration, Network QoS issues, E911 and more.

  Panelists

  • Jay Hanke - Midwest Wireless

  • Forrest Christian serves as Vice President of Technical Operations for the Montana Internet Corporation (MIC) and performs the duties of a CTO in that role.  In short, Forrest is the person directly responsible for the design and ongoing operation of MIC's network.
