Back to Agenda
The City of Tempe is the first major
metropolitan area in the United States to deploy
citywide wireless Internet access. The city of
Tempe, AZ, in partnership with WAZTempe, is currently
deploying a 40-square-mile Wi-Fi network that will
provide a "Double-Duty WiFi Network to both residents
and public safety municipal employees. WazTempe is an innovative
public-private partnership that will create an Open
Access Metro-Scale, Outdoor WiFi service in Tempe, AZ
that will deliver 95% coverage of Downtown Tempe, AZ.
The network will eventually morph into a "Double-Duty
WiFi Network" capable of supporting both a "Public
Safety " and "Private Sector Open Access" Network.
The
"Double-Duty Network" provides for two parallel uses of
the WiFi Infrastructure:
- An open to the public (Public Services Network)
side for General Public use
- A protected, private (Public Safety Network) side
for secure City Government use
The beauty of the Double-Duty Network is that it does
not duplicate cost, rather it shares a large portion of
the infrastructure such that the public is best served
in two ways, obviously by having access to a robust WiFi
Network, and, more importantly, by reducing the total
cost to the taxpayer, since common network
infrastructure is shared on both the "private and public
sides." The Public Network side also benefits to
the City too, because it helps defray the cost of a
state-of-the-art Public Safety Network by sharing a
portion of the infrastructure with other users. |
