So You Wanna Build a Municipal Wireless Network?
Back to Agenda

You've heard the hype...license exempt wireless (WiMAX, WiFi, Mesh) is transforming the world, and if you don't do something right away, you'll be left behind in the dust...

Unfortunately, such enthusiasm, without a dose of reality, often results in disaster.  In order to avoid adopting a "Plug and Pray" attitude, this session will focus on the major technical and business issues that need to be addressed when planning and executing wide-area Wireless deployments.  Among the topics to be addressed are:

  • Deploying for the right reasons
  • Understanding the legal and political landscape
  • Avoiding lawsuits from the private sector
  • Understanding throughput and network capacity
  • Minimizing sources of noise and interference
  • Necessity and Limitations of "Line-of-Sight" and 2nd generation NLoS technologies
  • Network Architectures
  • What is the deal with Mesh?
  • Will the network make money?
  • Can I service both public & private sectors on the same network
  • Can I add voice and video over this network
  • Where does WiMAX fit in?
